Astrographic Catalogue UCAC3 now out was created by JohnONeill
Hi,

The UCAC3 is now out (via Vizier) with very high quality astrometry.
It also has much improved photometry over the GSC.

The beta update of Guide8 can query it over the web.

Amazing!

If you like, you can order a DVD copy of the catalogue.

Send an email to 'ucac3@usno.navy.mil' with your name and postal address. Ask really really nicely...

I sent a mail last weekend but haven't gotten anything yet. They may only post to US address, I'm not sure...

Surprise from the Postie today - I got a DVD copy of UCA3! All the way from Auckland according to the post mark...

That was really nice of the US Naval observatory to send it on.

The catalogue comes on a double sided DVD so amounts to about 8Gb of data in total. If anyone wants a copy, let me know. I can probably burn it onto two DVD's (can my standard DVD burner burn double sided DVD's?)

Bear in mind that *I think* current software that accesses catalogues (Astrometrica, TheSky etc) needs to be amended so it can access the data. So its use for now may be mute (though you can access via ViZier). Also note that some "issues" have been noted in the community whereby a few million stars are missing and some data seems to be suspect. Others say that UCAC3 is still a very useful tool...

For Guide8 users the beta update (very stable) version can also access the UCAC3 DVD. My version of the DVD seems to have only one side done, luckily the northern half.
