Observing lists

Hi all

Dont know if anybody can help me, I am looking for a resource that lists objects by constellation. What I am thinking of is something that lists all the messier objects, and the best NGC's for each constellation.

Nothing too fancy, just a list I can print out, that maybe contains the commom name for the objects also. Anybody know if such a list exists

I think this is what you are looking for. It's a 4mb zip file mostly made up of powerpoint files which are constellation maps. However, there is an excel file in it containing the constellations in a spreadsheet format.

If you don't have broadband, let me know and I'll e-mail you the spreadsheet as a separate file. The spreadsheet is only 320kb.

Thanks for that. just had a look at the excel file, has the info I am looking for alright and a lot more. Is a handy resource.

I have already ploughed ahead and started my own list by constellation that has the M's and the finest NGC's. It is just bare bones at present, but will add some more info to it

Just saw this thread tonight as I was looking back over a lot of posts I haven't had time read recently!

A highly respected list of 500 deep sky objects is that compiled by Vic Menard in the US. You can find "The List" at homepage.mac.com/vicmenard/telescopes/ ... about half-way down the page it is a pdf download.

An interesting list of the reddest stars compiled by Tomm Lorenzin is at www.1000plus.com/redstars.htm

Tomm is author of 1000+, a guide to the best deep sky objects. The book is out of print unfortunately. His web site does have a list of 2000+ DSOs that will keep you observing for a life time . . . www.1000plus.com/2000plus/

I've a bewildering amount of other lists saved off the 'Net and if you have the last IFAS CD you'll find a pot-pourri of HTML files in a zip archive on the CD -- you might have to wade through it to find these lists but lots of interesting stuff nonetheless!

Also, have a look over at www.southdublinastronomy.org/wiki/Library to get an idea of what sort of deep-sky books are available Trevor.
