Hi Owen!
Welcome to the boards! There was a Slaneyside group that used to meet around Wexford. I know its a bit of a trip unless it was on your side of Enniscorthy. There is also a Kildare group that meet in Newbridge. Still, as far as we know on these boards, not many have surfaced around the Carlow/Kilkenny areas. Thats not to say there is a large portion of people here in hiding!
See what replies become of your post. Heck, if you are feeling adventurous, why not think of starting your own club in the area anyway? That is how many-a-club has started in Ireland. Simply put a note up in a parish bulletin, or local notes section of your paper, and organise a meeting date and time for anyone interested to turn up? You could be surprised, you could be disappointed, but you will never know until you try it!
As I said there are lots of clubs throughout Ireland that started the same way, young and old. Feel free to ask for tips and so on!
Otherwise, enjoy your stay!
Seanie.

Had a good ole chat with Owen on the phone yesterday afternoon folks, and he is really keen on helping a local astronomy group get set up. Trouble is, he thinks his options may be limited as he is still in school (4th year in secondary)! But, that shouldn't stop him, isn't that right guys??
I gave him some advice for the simple means of starting up a club. I think that even if there are too few a member on these boards from his area, some encouragement for him on how he can still go about setting one up locally would be great!
Lets hear it!

South Dublin Astronomical Society has very close links to Gonzaga College secondary school with the students being an active portion of the members.
Try and find a few people in the area that are interested, possibly do a sidewalk astronomy type thing with the school (I'm sure people here can turn up and help out), that might encourage a few more to get involved.

My advice would be to write a little piece on what you want to do and your contact number and submit it to your local papers. they should be more than happy to help you.
Cheers
