Canon350 IR Filter was created by mlkcampion
Hey
I plan on using a Canon350D for astrophotography, however
the camera i have still has the Canon IR filter built in. what kind off
pictures does this limit me to and would i be better of getting it
removed (by Hutech).
Does anyone use the 350D with the filter still installed, i would
be interested in seeing some of these?
Also do any other companies other then Hutech remove the filter?
I still would like to use the camera for
normal use as well i assume that if i remove the filter i can get
a replacment filter to attach to the lens.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
The filter inhibits the imaging of red (h-alpha) nebula.
If you remove it, you'll need to get an after market filter for normal daytime use which goes in front of the lens, or you could just change the colours in photoshop (adjust white balance).
Some of the guys here have removed the filter, its not difficult, it just takes a little care.

Removing the IR filter lets the camera see light that is invisible to the human eye, (which is cheating! , but does produce lovely images)

It is that red nebulosity that is missed by our eyes as it cannot pick up this borderline infra red wavelength. The filter (H-alpha) enhances it. It is worth the mod to your Canon alright. As Dave said above, just purchase a standard IR filter that screws over the front of your lenses (like older versions of the UV filter which is now built-in on most new lens kits) for regular (daytime) photography.

Hey
Thanks for the replies! I will more then likely make the mods
myself, but i think i will leave it for a few months until i get the hang
of all this astrophotography.
For those who have actually made the mod where can i get the replacement glass?
Cheers
Mike

Most good camera shops should be able to order you one, though I think a reputable online dealer would be quicker.
