Dark sites in Kildare was created by picasso
Hi there

New to boards and was wondering if anyone knew of any darkish sites near Maynooth, Celbridge , Kilcock etc for viewing ?
Have transport so even further afield could suit !
Thanks

Welcome aboard!

I live in Maynooth myself as it happens. Because Dublin is so near you'll have to go a long way from Maynooth to get a fully dark sky along all horizons. Your best bet is to head out into the void between Maynooth and Dunshaughlin. That's a pretty big area without any real towns. There must be some dark skies to be had there!

Thanks Bart
Sounds like good advice - Will try and maybe scout out some sites in that area!
PS Are there any Astro Clubs in the area - the Kildare site seems to be a dead link .

I'm pretty sure the Kildare society still exists .... strange that the site is down. Because I work in the university in Maynooth I can join the society on campus there (Astro2). Unfortunately membership is only open to students and staff of the university. Mind you, most events are open to all so you can come along even if you may not be able to join.

Hi picasso,
sorry for the late reply, only back in the country after honeymoon. Kildare AS is a little sleepy at present, but I think it might try and get back together for the new season which has just started. Work committments and other priorities have taken a grip over practicaly all of its committee members of late.

Keep an eye out for any Tullamore AS meetings. We sometimes get a few stragglers from as far away as Maynooth. Having lived in Maynooth myself for about 6 years and travelled between here and there during that time, it is only about a 45 minute drive with the new motorway(s) in place.

Just something to think about if you're stuck for options.

Welcome to the boards and enjoy your stay!
