Aye. The only benefit of 'setting circles' on the axes come into play when you have a motorised mount, and you are looking for out of sight objects i.e. you need the accuracy of pinpointing the location of something not easily spotted through the finderscope, for example. Star hopping takes the same amount of time to locate an object (when you get used to it, which will be fast), so you just got to keep practising!

I've never even tried to use them - because to do so you need light! I try to use even red light as little as possible when observing.

That's true about red LED's. I've been messing about with mine waiting for clouds to break and they can be as bad as much as white ones. Only thing is it doesnt take your eyes as long to readjust back to the dark, but for a couple of minutes all you see is red.
