@paulevans - thanks for the info! i plan to ease myself in, snapping here and there. itll take a while getting into it i think, but i feel im going to enjoy the journey.
@Keith g - thanks also for the info and ill look out for 'algol' - i wasnt sure where precisely to look at the information i got on the web always seemed to be old news. as i said, Saturn was small but it really was a sight to behold - in fact i didnt even expect to see any rings at all.
this colour issue - why exactly am i seeing Saturn/Mars in white? is it to do with atmosphere? size of lens?
no looking tonight though - not with the rain were getting here

Yeah atmosphere has a lot to do with how you see colours. The 1st time i saw Mars it was the exact colour you imagine it to be. The 2nd,3rd time i saw it (this week) it was white/blue tinge.
P.S.~~~Its pouring down here too.

Hi Paul,
welcome along to the boards. I can vouch for the Skylux. Best 70 euros ever spent on anything! You will be surprised just how many objects out of your star atlas (especially the Messier (M-number) catalogue of objects) you will be able to spot with the Skylux.
Seanie.
