Not quite on the belt -- it's the middle point of light in the sword hanging down from the belt.

Cheers,

Alright mate, yeah you can view the Orion Nebula on any good night, it's one of the top sights. You can pick it out with your eyes on good dark nights but its best in binoculars or a telescope at low magnification (like 50x). Just look at the middle star in his sword going down the ways. When your eyes are adjusted to the dark it will look even better. It should appear as a sort of gray or greenish pile of gas around that star. Long exposure photos bring out the colour in it. If you get a good view of it you can see more stars inside, theres a little set people call the "trapezium" that people usually look for.

Now is about the best time of year for it. It's placed well in the evening in Dec and January. If you're into staying up late, it's placed well at 2 or 3 AM in Oct and Nov.

Note that it's visible for a month or so on either side of those, but won't be very high above the horizon and so is more susceptible to bad seeing and light pollution.
