book recommendations required

While it's not a book I find the SEDS site an excellent resource for getting details about any messier object + lots of images available there - www.seds.org/Messier

e.g. here's their entry for M31

www.seds.org/Messier/m/m031.html

They also list some of the brighter NGC objects.
