Scope Suitability

I was wondering, of the two scopes currently under the stairs (damn weather) is there any particular type of observing more suited to one than the other (scope 1 is a 93mm refractor, f10.8, scope 2 is a 200mm newtonian, f5). So far I've been mostly mooching around deep sky looking at some of the messiers, but would a lunar/solar program be more suited to either scope?

6 to one, hald a dozen to the other Eamonn! The refractor is great for light viewing of the Sun and Moon and to see the phases of the inner planets, as well as minor detail on Jupiter and Saturn. The larger reflector is ideal for deepsky objects and scanning along the Cygnus arm of the Milky Way at this time of year.

So, whilst you probably knew this kind of an answer was coming, which is your more favourite of the two?

the 8" still being broken out whenever weather permitting, but some fine night am gonna break out the two side by side for the craic, am going to press gang in-laws into helping me lug and set up stuff: give 'em drink and they're happy... the joys of cheap labour!

I would have though the 200mm newtonian would be best at all things as it would have greater light gathering power.

The only area where the refracter may hold its own would be those really bright objects like the moon where the additional light gathering would not be so important. Its smaller field of view would be good for close up views of craters.

I would go for the 200mm newtonian.

yea, 99 times out of 100, the 200mm will outperform the smaller refractor.
