Moon Pictures was created by raymond
Hi,

Just posted my first attempts with Astrophotography, using Canon 450D unmodified. The pics were taken with different ISO settings of 100 to 400 on the bulb function on the camera. I am very new to using the camera at this stage and would need a lot of time and help to learn how to use it. I recently got a T-ring adapter from Astronomy Ireland and mounted the camera directly onto the Celestron 6in. refractor . I was also trying to make an image of the andromeda galaxy but I was only getting dark images.
If anybody could please give me some settings to try with the camera I would much appreciate it.I find the subject very interesting but at the moment, I am just operating by myself.

Many thanks,

Ray.

For a first attempt, those are excellent images Ray. Astrophotography is a skill that takes time and a lot of effort to master. The moon is an excellent target to start on.

Your images are nice and sharp so that's one of the harder hurdles crossed.

In terms of settings, I would the following suggestions:
* For the Moon, use ISO100 to keep noise to a minimum;
* Take the images in RAW mode (Blub mode). This will ensure the camera does not reduce the image quality before you a chance to tweak it.
* When you have taken the image, check the histogram on the camera. Make sure none of the image is overexposed...exmple of an overexposed one here:

Line on right hand side of the histogram - means overexposed.

After that, it's just small tweaking in Photoshop or some other software like that (free one: GIMP) and plenty practice!

Hi Michael,

Thanks a million for the reply. Will definately check the histogram the nex time out. Dont have photoshop at the moment, considering taking it! Will check that one out, GIMP. Will keep practising and post some more in the future.

Thanks again,

Ray.

Ray - they're excellent images. Waaaay better than my first attempts a few years back.

If its help and advice you want, there's no better place for you to get it.

Keep at it, keep posting your images and let us know how you progress.

Dave
