New to all this!

Hello,

This is my first post so here goes! I've only recently started to get
into astronomy and finding it a fascinating subject. I've just orded
my first scope, a Celestron NexStar 130 SLT and cannot wait until it arrives.

I've always enjoyed looking to the stares and im luck enough that my job allows me
to see the milky way on evening shifts (im a pilot).

I was wondering if anyone had good tips on where they go to view the
sky around the Dublin area? Any advice would be great of if anyone is planning
on going out soon and doesn't mind a hanger on joining them?

I've started to do alot of reading so still at the research stage until
my telescope arrives. Also, anyone have any experience of the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT?

Hey John - welcome aboard!

There's a pretty active group of folks in and around the Dublin area who frequently have observing sessions. Bear in mind, its not just observing - there is of course the "safety in numbers" aspect, the social aspect and they'll be more than prepared to help you along with your own equipment - they are delighted to have "hanger's on". I'm sure they'll chime in here at some point or check the links section on this site and browse the local clubs.

There's a star party in Galway in February - that's also another great way to meet, attend lectures and see what this is all about. A good social scene is usually to be had in the bar

I think you'll get along with it fine - but beware, you may begin to feel the illness known as "aperture" fever within just a few short months

Welcome to the madness:P . It's always great to see new people coming to this great hobby.

There are those of us in SDAS who go observing when possible in Ballyraemon, which is close to the Sugarloaf mountain and you are more than welcome to come along whenever we go out again, keep an eye on the site for observing nights.

I am planning an all-nighter sometime in April or May which you are invited.

Thanks a million for all your help. Im from the northside, out Malahide
area. But I would be willing to travel to the right spot.

Its quite quick getting from Malahide to the Sugarloaf on the M50 at night. I think Dave Brannigan lives even further away than you and he makes it to every Ballyremon Session. However there are also observing sessions closer to home to you as well. The North Dublin Astronomy group meets at Red Island in Skerries.
