Celestial Calendar 2006 (WIP - nothing added yet)

hi all,

I am going to post up a calendar of celestial events for 2006 to this forum probably next week. It will include links to sites that will offer more detailed information on various phenomena (e.g. Fred Espenak's eclipse site).

I am looking for some suggestions as to how detailed it should be. In other words, do people want to see every date of minimum of the eclipsing binary Algol or dates of maximum of every minor meteor shower going? Probably not, so if you agree with this, or have a suggestion or two, feel free to append to this thread.

just to add, this forum will strictly be for information on what's up in the sky. Observing reports or any other off-topic threads will be moved to other relevant areas of the board or may even be removed altogether if deemed waffle (hope I haven't gone on too much there myself now!)

Just one suggestion that might be useful-
A little icon with eyes, binoculars or a telescope describing whether you can see it with eyes, binos or scope. Keep it dumbed down a little for newbies and, er.. me.

hmm, there doesn't seem to be any smileys that would do that unfortunately. I could maybe tag three stars (in bold) to any event visible to the unaided eye, two for binoculars, and one for scopes? Other option is to actually say beside each line how easy the event is to see . . . (NE/BIN/TEL) or (BIN/TEL), for example.

Sounds like a great idea John, one thats a long time coming for an astronomy-based site!

This could be a lot of work upon your shoulders if you were to include all the data you gave an example of. Perhaps, as an example, someone like John O'Neil (IAS) would supply such data for variable stars on a regular basis to you to add to this section? And thus a couple of other specific data sections, given to you, added by a couple of other dedicated individuals.

But in all, you've got my vote. I'm sure you do know the kind of format best suited to this sort of thing to be of use to both newbies and advanced amateurs alike!

Hi John, Great idea.

If its any use I have data on Jupiter GRS times and Jupiter satellite mutual events on my website just follow the Sky Guide link on the left and use as you wish. Data comes from a program I wrote for GRS times and satellite events comes from win occult. All have proven to be very accurate.
