Check this out, on the Aurigid Mac Mission to study this ancient meteor shower.
Practice on the Perseids takes place for next weekend, and there is a little rate calculator for the Perseids, the Aurigids, the Leonids, and the Geminids on this page link above. User defined location option.

This unique encounter could provide insights about how long-period comets loose large dust grains and about how to translate the observed dust trail crossing into physical data about the parent comet, and even provide more evidence for the hypothesized "pristine crust" of a comet. This crust would be the product of cosmic ray bombardment during the years when the comet was in cold storage in the Oort cloud.
What "New" science will we learn from this expensive mission?
None I suspect.
Peter.

Anyway 'New Science' what does that mean?!
All science is science,
Old or new,,,
You don't need me to point out the may times someone went back to
something long forgotten only to apply new knowlage or ideas to gleen a breakthrough!
