Seems like the debris in the planets rings also got cought up around some of the moons and settled on their equators.

That would also seem to account for the strange mountain range which exactly traces out Iapetus's equator:

But they seem to discount this for Iapetus for some reason.

Then again, EVERYTHING is strange about Yin-Yang Iapetus!

My understanding of the Iapetus ridge is that it formed when the two hemispheres of the moon rejoined following a colossal impact that *just* split the moon in two without shattering it completely. If you look at the ridge you can see that it is itself cratered suggesting that the moon was still under bombardment after the ridge developed. Either that of the acretion phase stopped before the bombardment phase started.

I like the 'big impact' scenario - much more violent!! :D
