Supernova Discovery in NGC 4088 was created by Neill
Hello,
New Bright(ish) Supernova in Galaxy NGC 4088 Guy Hurst (TA Magazine) has recently issued an e-circular (Circular No. 2541) announcing a supernova discovery in galaxy NGC 4088. The SN, discovered by Giovanni Cortini, Italy, has been designated 2009dd and at discovery was at magnitude 13.7. This is relatively bright for a SN, and with the galaxy well placed in Ursa Major is an ideal opportunity for BAA members to monitor its increase or decrease in brightness over the next few nights. NGC 4088 is a magnitude 10.8 galaxy easily visible in a 20cm telescope although to see the SN will probably require a larger aperture. Imagers should have no trouble capturing the "new" star in a 20cm telescope. Note - galaxy NGC 4085 lies 12 arcmin south of NGC 4088. The SN lies at RA 12h 05m 33.6s and Dec +50d 32m 20s (2000.0), which puts it 2"Wand 5"S of the centre of the galaxy (details taken from TA Circular).

Thanks for that Neill - 13.7 is actually *dazzling* when it comes to a SN discovery!
Here's some more info plus a link to the discovery image - it is really *very* bright.
Dave
SUPERNOVA 2009dd IN NGC 4088
G. Cortini, Predappio, Italy, reports the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag about 13.7) on several unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag near 18.5) taken on Apr. 13.97 and 14.82 UT during his supernova search program with a 0.35-m telescope at the Monte Maggiore Observatory. The new object is located at R.A. = 12h05m33s.6 +/- 0s.1, Decl. = +50o32'20"
+/- 3" (equinox 2000.0), which is 2" west and 5" south of the center of
NGC 4088. Nothing is visible at this position on his image taken on Feb.
19.71 (limiting mag about 18.5) or on red and blue Palomar Sky Survey plates. After the object was posted on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed- objects webpage (based on only the first night's observation by Cortini), A. Dimai (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy) reported an independent discovery of 2009dd at mag about 13.8 on unfiltered CCD images (limiting mag about
19.0) taken by Elisa Londero (Gemona, Italy) and himself in the course of the CROSS program (cf. IAUC 7373) with the 0.5-m "Ullrich" telescope on Apr. 13.05, providing position end figures 34s.10, 18".6 (offset 1" west and 3" south of the nucleus of the galaxy NGC 4088); confirming images on Apr. 14.80 yield mag about 13.5 for 2009dd. A CROSS image of the same field taken on Feb. 28 showed nothing at the position of 2009dd (limiting mag about 19.0), and it does not appear on Palomar Sky Survey infrared, red, and blue plates. Dimai has posted their discovery image at URL www.cortinastelle.it/cross/SN-NGC4088_20090413.jpg .

Oh I don't beleive this!!!
On April 14th I planned a S/N search. I was all set up targets chosen ready to go and it clouded in. I just took a look at my target list from the observatory script.
#count 3
#interval 30
#filter Luminance
#binning 1
#stackalign
NGC 4088
Oh well it was the 74th object in the list so I might not have gotten to it anyway!!

My effort on it from tonight. A stacked image since conditions were pathetic so no use for photometry.
