Look at Japan, I cant see why people are amazed by tidal magma/plate effects caused by the moon, if it can do it to the oceans, its must have some affect deeper in the Earth, Io is an extreme example of this,
but does it mean the end of the world??, nope.

I heard this on the radio too, what nonsence.
I hope i have this right.....
Tides are due to differential gravitation.
This is proportional to; 2delta r (distance between two points eg for earth/moon - near and far side of earth) and M mass of larger body
and inversly proportional to R^3
The difference in R is negligible on the 19th
is this force strong enough to move techtonic plates? probably not
wrt to Io R is nearly the same (factor of about 1.05) but M is hugely diffrent (jupiter is 316x earth) and so a much stronger tidal effect

ok I can see the astrophysicists sharpening their keyboards already:unsure:

If the plates are already under extreme stress, which they seem to be, all they might need is a tiny nudge to tip them over the edge and cause them to slip.
The tiny lunar force difference could be the straw that breaks the camels back.
Personally, I'd be more worried about what the Sun is going to do next than the moon right now.

v true John - 2 X class flares in a month. while we know the potential for flares on certain Active Regions we still cant predict when (or if) theyll let-off. Or for that matter how to stop a large cme once its released.

When I saw the news today, my first thought was my dismissive sarcastic post last night above aimed at the crackpots.

Maybe I was a little quick to dismiss the whole idea!!
