Just looking back on the Dec competition entries (and others).

I was just thinking that if possible there should be 2 classes in the comp...beginners and advanced.

There are lots of avid beginners on the boards who have no chance of beating the big boys in the astro pic comps.

Just a thought.

It's not seperated anywhere else, it is always of an 'open' nature. Of course, you're not going to submit a poor shot of e.f. the Orion Nebula if you don't have the kit for a proper good picture. Or, even if you do, but haven't learned how it works fully, It should be a goal to ry and achieve the best you can from that kit in the future.

I am in the same boat. I have DSLR, adapters, mounts, and scopes, and great software to boot, but no where near as good at taking shots as from what you have seen submitted. However, the variations in themes means that at some stage during the year (like the current January theme), there is a window of opportunity for any level of astrophotographer.

Seanie thanks for that insight. I can appreciate what you mean about submitting a poor(er) quality pic (for whatever reason).

Indeed there are often times when the comp target is something that people at any level can capture so it can level out the playing field and indeed the competition inspires people to strive to better their images and refine their techniques.

I suppose thats the whole concept of the nature of competition...is to compete with others who you know are better and stronger then yourself with the main goal being to better yourself and hopfully one day beating those that are better and stronger then yourself.

It's the taking part that counts...right?

And i guess once people who submit and are happy to go up against the big boys have no complaints...why change the rules.
