More of a thread suggestion than a forum one...

...but when I saw enoonan's post (Eoin is his name, another new member - welcome aboard!) here , I thought it would be nice to have a thread, much like the Links forum in that it is a once-off for future use.

The Idea:
A person to collate together images of the same object(s), taken with different scopes. For example;

{PHOTO OF SATURN}
Taken with 30mm eyepiece (or similar) in a 70mm refractor

{PHOTO OF SATURN}
Taken with a 30mm eyepiece in a 6 inch reflector (akin to a 4.5 inch refractor)

{PHOTO OF SATURN}
Taken with a 30mm eyepiece in an 8 or 10 inch reflector (akin to a 6 or 8 inch refractor)

This would give noobies with their new toys since yesterday the chance to see what they really can expect to see. Granted, they will have to consider that an astrophotograph contains more data than what the eye will see, so they can use their imagination for a best case scenario.

Thoughts?

Sounds like a cool idea but perhaps a searchable gallery of images is a better way to acomplish this.

Thats what I thought, but the current site layout (pending the new skin etc) is not very noobie friendly for looking for files. However, if the issue was bandwidth usage, hence why I thought a moderator-of-sorts could keep it tidy, and all images submitted kept to a respectable size.

Wouldn't bandwidth be an issue with this. How about using something like webshots (not webshots itself cos it's evil ;) ). Or even a Yahoo gallery.

To save bandwidth if we use threads people could use www.imageshack.us/ to upload images to and then link in the thread with a thumbnail. I'm a member of a 'private' forum on boards.ie that uses this quite effectively :) Basically we'd be leeching their bandwidth and saving on our own.

Seanie that is a really good idea, :idea: :idea: :idea: I am sure that with all the scopes between all of us you would get a diverse range of images.I know myself being a noobie that it would be something I would like to see.

Steve,
I was thinking myself along the lines of it being a once off thread, like a directory - akin to the Links forum. No one will be able to add at random to it. Only a few example photos would be included, and then only 2 or 3 examples of those photos in differing scopes. The 'moderator' would simply collect the images he/she can find, fix them to a certain pixel & data size, put'em in a thread/forum, and thats it! No additions of new photos, no eating of bandwidth. It'll only be viewed as needed.

Its just a suggestion, if its no good, an-off site library would be good, but that kinda diverts traffic away from here IMO.
