Subscribing to a thread

When I post a reply to a thread it seems to automatically subscribe me to the thread. When someone then posts a reply to the thread, it sends me a notification e-mail. The only way I have found thus far to stop getting further e-mails is to go back to the thread and hit the "unsubscribe" button. How do I ensure I don't automatically get subscribed to a thread?

When you post to the forum, one of the tick boxes is "Subscribe".
I have changed the default setting from always ticked to not ticked

I thought the boards had gone all quiet lately... now I realise that you've just switched over to the new system - well done!

However, I'm no longer getting New Topic or Reply notifications emailed directly to me any longer. How do I switch that facility back on?
