According to their website, AI are having a mars watch on 4th November. If we are having one, should we not aim to have ours before AI to ensure maximum publicity


I have to admit that came to mind though I only found that out after suggesting the idea.

The dates picked were picked to avoid the moon.

Well, the reason I was thinking of having it with a Quarter Moon is that it gives an extra 'in your face' object to look at in the sky! And, it would be too bright to loose Martian detail - as long as it is not too close to Mars!
