Meteorites coming down over Wexford? was created by marko
Hello everybody,
In the early hours this morning, April 14th between approx 0015 and 0030hrs, I was startled by a series of "explosions" and flashes in the sky low in the east. At first I thought it was fireworks but the late hour and the fact that the flashes seemed to be coming from behind the clouds and were all the same colour (white) made me think otherwise. Also the display lasted quite a long time, maybe 10 minutes, I have seen and heard fireballs and large metoers before (Calow 1999) they are over in a matter of seconds, but this was something else.
So did anyone else out there see this thing aswell, or does anyone know what it actually was?
Thanks,
Mark,
Wexford.

Wow marko,
When it illuminated the cloud, was there any colour, could you see any signs of disintegration or of it breaking up?
Since it was east of you, could it have been a flare out at sea,
I presume that flares dont reach the clouds.

No doubt you've already thought of this, but perhaps there was a thunderstorm cell out to sea. Were the clouds cumulonimbus?

Thanks for the replies lads, in answer to your questions, Dave the only colour I noticed was white and I did'nt actually see any object because of the cloud cover,as for flares the explosions were quite loud and came in quick succeesion like fireworks but behind the clouds, I think that rules out flares. Seani, I dont thinks it was a thunderstorm it seemed to start and stop too suddenly for that.
I am beginning to think now that it might have been a land based explosion of some kind, it seemed very low down to the east which means it would have had to have been between my house and the sea, I contacted the Wexford gardai today but they recieved no reports of anything like that last night, they suggested "young lads with firecrackers".
Thanks again for the replies, if anyone else has any suggestions or knows anything about this I'd love to hear from you,
Mark.

Maybe you did see a meteor break up, do you think it could have reached the ground ??

The clouds would almost rule out any chance of getting a definitive trajectory IF it was a meteorite unfortunately. While Mark is able to gie a general direction of where the noises came from, my guess is that without the visual aid of foreground or background objects (stars), then the height, path etc is useless.
