Yep, CBAT alright Dave, cfa-www.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html
run by the International Astronomical Union (IAU)

As also mentioned, CBAT deals with minor planets as well as comets. THIS IS THE PLACE TO REPORT ANY DISCOVERY/SUSPECT OBJECT!!
If you place your query elsewhere, anybody can claim to take over your query - it's been done before!

When you ask about a supernova, is this within our own galaxy? If it is, then
www.aavso.org would be a major player, also VSNET
www.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/index.html

This is actually my main study in astronomy, so their e-mail lists are very important, I get them every day and send in observations, I'm still looking for my 1st nova after all these years!

Good Luck,
Keith..

Dave,

This reminds me when I discovered my first nova back aons ago, I had to contact Dunsink Observatory at the time , It was the late William Dumpleton who confirmed the discovery by photographing the nova from Dunsink. They sent a telex message of the discovery details to the IAU office at Harvard. Keith has given you those details.

I remember, Brian Marsden was in charge then at Harvard, because I did'nt have a telex machine, I was relying on the Director, Patrick Wayman, who telephone me for more follow info at 5.00 am that morning.

It's of course much simplar now, you just send them an e-mail.

Good luck and clear skies on your hunting,

Eamonn A
