Struggling for a name was created by dmcdona
Folks - with the new observatory imminent, I was thinking today of what to call it.

I had a swift think of how observatories are named - Lowell, Palomar, Greenwich, Dunsink etc. I could call it the 'Celbridge Observatory' but I won't be here forever. So I had a look at some names of other amateur observatories - they mostly seem to be named after the place they're in - Red Creek, or some celestial object - Big Bear, or even the shape of the observatory - Igloo.

So, I'm pretty stumped. I was going to call it after my website - Astroshack but I'm not so sure of that. All suggestions will be considered - the more bizarre or hilarious the better.

How about Jason?

C'mon - get your suggestions in!

Cheers

Well, Lowell is a surname, and so is Keck (I think), and if you count Hubble, Spitzer and Chandra as observatories also - how about your own surname?

Hhhmmm.. The MacDonald Observatory... doesn't quite have the same quality tone as the other surnamed observatories!

I like AstroShack TM myself!

Actually Astroshack is quite cool, cause thats exactly what it is an astro shack!! How about 'Oh no not another asteroid false alarm?' < :D

Seriously tho; I'd be inclined to call it something fairly Irish, maybe after one of the great irish scientists, what about 'The Hamilton Observatory' after the great mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton who first proposed the formula for quaternation multiplication i2 = j2 = k2 = i j k = -1

Or how about 'I Hope To God The Roof Stays On Observatory'. Cause thats what you'll be saying come January!!

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.

Hmmm - McDonald Observatory. It wouldn't be long before someone asks where the drive-thru lane is...

AstroShack is cool but there are a few other 'AstroShacks' out there. Its a distinct possibility but God forbid I ever got an MPC code...

Keck: 342
Hubble: 99
Dunsink: 951
Greenwich: 1
AstroShack: 1058

Wouldn't look too good in the list....

No, definately not! With a name like that, you'd expect it to have a drive-thru!..

How about the Minogue Observatory..... for obvious reasons!

Perhap because light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
