Dave,
here's a link to an english-irish astronomical dictionary on the web that I posted previously . . .
www.acmhainn.ie/tearmai/realt.htm
Réadlann Cill Dara (Kildare Observatory) sounds ok???
reminds me of the time Sky and Telescope rang a (tongue-in-check) article calling for suggestions of what to rename the term Big Bang to. 13,000 entries poured in from around the world including "What the hell was that?" (as said by God) to "The Ferris wheel of ups and Downs" (someone was trying to curry favour with two of the original article authors -- Ferris and Downs -- with Carl Sagan being the third judge).
or another time someone in the States asked one of the astronomy newsgroups what to call their new born daughter. I suggested RealtÃn (little star) but they plumbed for Sky Andromeda in the end . . . sheesh . . .
have fun!
John

Reminds me of the ad in S&T re the guy who names his daughter after one of the NGC objects!or another time someone in the States asked one of the astronomy newsgroups what to call their new born daughter. I suggested RealtÃn (little star) but they plumbed for Sky Andromeda in the end . . . sheesh . . .

I'm stunned with the replies here!
OK - Phil - catchy but a bit risque for the base-minded folks out there. Though not as risque as an anonymous poster's suggestion - McDonald's Magnificent Ere*tion. They are both fine names and describe said observatory/purpose wonderfully. However, I can see the Daily Star headlines right now... - Celbridge, host to (one of above names in here)
The Irish names are very appealing - John's suggestion is really nice, though I'd like to steer clear of place names in case we move soon! But the dictionary is priceless - its now bookmarked and I'll be going through it. But there really are some fine Irish names in there.
Chris's solar Goddesses look great - Aimend is a great name - relally like that one, though the others are equally worthy.
As for getting Miss Minogue over for the inaugural opening, I'll work on that. Unfortunately, it won't be an open invite Anthony - of that I am sure. Just me and her under the stars in a dark observatory. mmmm
Bill - if I'm reading you right, that's a front runner I think (Railway?)
And who called their child Moonbeam? Can't remeber who. But to call a child NGC4872 is a bit much
I'll have to trawl through all these really great names though - and I will of course let you all know what the final choice is. And thanks a million for sending them in. If anyone else thinks of any, do let me know.
By the way Fiona (the other half) said to call it just Dave's Ere*tion. I'm not sure why she left out the magnificent
