Speak about making the most of your opportunity! As for the lights, it can be a good thing when imaging the planets and/or moon since it mitigates their overwhelming brightness (seriously).maybe Eric should move over to the taller building, imagine all the lights from those tower blocks, it must be a pain, all the same he has fab images of the planets.

Crikey - I'm going to Shanghai in less than two weeks time (I have a sister over there). Is it really that bad? Should I bring a gas mask or something?

You dont need to bring your telescope.
Yes - it is bad in comparison to what we are used to at home; here the pollution is more visible and evident. Apert from contributing 40% of greenhouse gases and opening a new power station every week there is the other matter of global warming impact. If it gets cold enough the pollution mist falls lower and you can see things for a while. It might be minus 10 degrees which it was in Beijing on sunday - coldes for 50 years. So wear your woolen drawers.
I go home tomorrow night.
