Who knows what December holds..

Clear skies

A beautiful Venusian apparition.

The Moon riding high along the ecliptic.

Saturn rising earlier in the evening.

Mars fading but still being glorious.

And generally some of the clodest and clearest nights of the year. Perfect for prowling through Orion and environs through binoculars.

Thanks guys and thats a great December list there :D

As the main Nov highlight i would be divided between two things.

1) The ghostly Gegenschein and how much it has stretched as it has slowly moved eastward over the last 2 dark periods!

2) The comet searching which rewards me with many treasures each night and as taught me the sky in a way no book every could. I have learned so much from doing this and have seen many amazing transient phenomena that i would have otherwise missed had i not been doing this kind of observing. I guess this is the most important to me :D

Martin - I think you're slacking. That list is way shorter than October's. Please ensure you're December list is suitably long or we'll have to have words with you.

Martin,

great list as always. You are making those of us who rarely keep an observing log very ashamed

re: atmospherics: I picked up a copy of Walter Tape's "Atmospheric Halos" recently (part of the Antarctic Research series). Amazing pictures of all sorts of rare halo phenomena (e.g. the Tricker arcs, anthelion arcs, etc.).

spaceweather.com has a link today to a unique site on Lightning Sprites -- www.eurosprite.net . . . I love our atmosphere :) (but then we couldn't live without it!)
