BBC article on light pollution.
I'm guessing that this group, comprising of the BAA and The Council for the Protection of Rural England is making presentations to the UK parliments science and technology committee www.parliament.uk/parliamentary_committe...ee/scitech040203.cfm I think Terry was monitoring the working of that committee.
www.dark-skies.org/main.shtm is the BAA dark skies site.
Now we dont have nearly as bad a problem as the UK thankfully as you can see from a nighttime satellite photo. So the Irish situation has two fronts to fight on:
1. Preservation of what dark skies we have.
This involves ensuring that new developments use sensible lighting.
2. Replace current lights with more sensible ones.
However there does not seem to be a coordinated group here to tackle this. I know people have from time to time wrote to their TD, but is it time for the IAS or the IFAS to organise a bit better on this? Perhaps set up a section of the International Dark Sky Association ( www.darksky.org/ ) here? I cant find any mention of such a group existing already.
Thoughs?
Cheers,
~Al

I think it is a good idea ... Perhaps a post about this in the IFAS Forum would be a good idea, that way it will make its way to the Agenda for the next IFAS meeting.

Just to let you know, I've started talking to Bob Gent IDA Sections working group chair and the IDA European Liaison officer, about what is involved in becoming a regional section and how to go about setting this up.
www.darksky.org/infoshts/is008.html lists the basic info and I've asked for a copy of the bylaws.
So it will take a little longer than a couple of days to get a proposal together.
Though please post any comments you have, for or against the idea!
Cheers,
~Al
