Duty and VAT was created by ftodonoghue
Just had a chat with the postman this morning. He says that they are tightening up on duty and vat. He particularly mentioned stuff bought from amazon??? He says he already stung two people this morning, one for €15 and one for €300...ouch.
Cheers

They are always out for this stuff around christmass, so avoid getting anything expensive over the web untill well into January.

Thanks for the heads up Trev.
Whenever I order from the US, I budget for the Duty/VAT - if I don't get asked for it, I'm quids in. But if I do, I have the dosh to pay
As it happens, I had three items recently delivered - about $50, $200 and $300. No duty/vat on any of them. Perhaps the goods were valued below a certain threshold.
cheers

I asked him was there a limit below which we wont get hit and he said no. just had a look at the revenue site from a link here and anything over €22 is liable for both duty and vat

Books are VAT exempt. Other items from amazon will have the appropriate tax applied at the amazon checkout. So An Post shouldn't be going anywhere near amazon packages.
