Astronomy is not just the only place where quaint echoes from the past pervade a system.
Engineering has it too.
There is a quaint unit called the "Decibel" (Originally, and honestly, concocted to help early audio engineers tune the audio frequencies of their electronics to approximately mimic the way the human ear hears sounds..at that time an honest and successful engineering effort.).
However, even in the most advanced telecommunications systems today, engineers state gain and loss through "decibels".....even at 1000 gigahertz.
"10x the Log of the gain or loss" or " 20x the Log of the gain or loss" depending on what you are measuring.
Far simpler to state the GAIN or LOSS itself:
"If you place One Volt at one end of a cable and measure One Millivolt at the other end then your Loss =1000".
Like saying: "Sirius shines X more photons on Earth than Procyon does",
instead of using quaint "Stellar Magnitudes"
But that would be altogeter to sensible.
Peter.

Is it just logarithms or do you have issues with all numbers and functions?
Isn't the length of the meter great!

The thought has just occured to me that people might think that I am "against logs."
Silly.
I sincerely hope that Astronomy has honoured John Napier for one of humanity's greatest tools:
His invention of a technique to turn multiplication into addition: Logs.
Anybody know of a "Napier" crater or asteroid somewhere.
There should be one.
Peter.

My re-definition of the speed of light clearly piqued your interest Albert.
