Hi all
I took my CG-5 mount out for another spin last evening, as I was playing around with the hand controller one of the menus was called Named Objects, I got into the menu and saw the Hyades, Ring Nebula, Hercules Cluster, etc. However, there were some that totally stumped me and I thought it would be fun to see how many of you can give the Messier or NGC or IC catalogue number or even the constellation to the following:
1:Barnard's Galaxy
2:Bear Paw Galaxy
3:Blue Planetary
4:Blue Snowball
5:Bode's Nebula
6:Deer Lick Galaxy
7:Eight Burst Nebula
8:Sunflower Galaxy
9:Box Nebula
I know that there are some of you out there going, "the Blue Planatary, that's obvious."
See how many you know before you look up their names on the net.
Have fun.
Paul
By the way, I love the names of 2, 6 and 7.

Crickey! Well, I'll be the first to admit this, but out of that list Paul, Bodes Nebula (Galaxy?) and Sunflower Galaxy were the only ones I have heard of, let alone know!
...M81 and M63 respectively, by the way.
(well, I heard of Barnerd's galaxy, but I don't know the M number!)
Seanie.

Hi Seanie
You picked out the two Messier objects, I had heard of Bode's Nebula before and I kind of suspected that it was M81, I didn't know about the Sunflower Galaxy being M63.
With names like Bear Paw, Deer Lick and Eight BUrst, who gets to name these objects?
And what exactly is a Deer Lick? Apart from the obvious connection between a four legged antlered resident of the Phoenix Park and it's tongue.

Could be the Deer Lick observatory... Dunno where it got its name from though. Must be a US colloquialism.

Jeepers, I must say I only know a few of them and even that's just because I wondered what they were after seeing them on the handset and looked them up afterwards.
BTW The Sunflower is one of my all time favourite objects now after seeing the amazing pictures that Michael O'Connell and Dave Grennan posted of it earlier this year. Mind blowing stuff. It's just one of the most majestic objects I've seen.

Hi,
That is certainly an unusual list there.
I've heard of
1:Barnard's Galaxy
5:Bode's Nebula
8:Sunflower Galaxy
but never
2:Bear Paw Galaxy . (mag 12 galaxy in Lynx)
3:Blue Planetary . (CENTAURUS)
4:Blue Snowball . (andromeda, I recognised the ngc number, (7662) but not the name)
6:Deer Lick Galaxy . (stephens quintet, this name I recognise)
7:Eight Burst Nebula . (VELA)
9:Box Nebula . (mag11.5 planetary in ophiuchus)
They sound like very American names.
then again, 2 of these are southern sky objects, so we would never have come across them. Other details I found on the web.
