Not really related to the original topic, but I just found that public CB in Ireland is on 145.650 (I picked up some guys around the country chatting recently). Is there a chance that at such close range of frequencies, the ISS could pick up these ground-based transmissions? Or would they be too weak? Follow where I'm coming from? ;)

Frank,
are you including the good ole Bearcat handheld scanner? Are you able to pick up the transmissions as standard, or as Albert asked, with one of the special aerials attached?

S.

Yeah, picked up some voice transmissions on one of the passes.
Very brief and faint but it none the less.
I'm not sure what other scanner would do..
the maplin one did with the standard antenna.

Thats cool, I have Bearcat 72XLT, which has even surprised me as to things it has picked up (like a CB user in Oregon USA one day).

For the benefit of those whom are clueless about such pieces of technology (such as moi!), I presume by the their name that they can only receive - can't transmit, is that correct?

Is there any way I could conect one of these devices to a PC? Thinking of radio astronomy here...

You can connect the Maplin one with a special connector,
as for radio astronomy, I suspect you'd pick up as much
by de-tuning your telly.

Eh... 145MHz is not CB. Perhaps some amateur station? In which case they probably would be able to make contact with the ISS. However the ISS would not be picking up CB chatter from Mother Hubbards!
