Sign on the vatican observatory was created by albertw
Hi,

Bro. Consolmagno in his talk to SDAS a while back showed a picture of the Vatican observatory with some latin written on it. Paul Tipper (latin expert!) translated it into English!

Can anyone remember what the sign says? or even better got a copy of the photo?

Cheers,
~Al

Got it - Deum Creatorem, venite adoremus.

Not Caeli enarrant gloriam Dei which I thought it was.

Deum Creatorem, venite adoremus?

Ah right... Deum? Sounds a bit like Deus right? Lets not get all life of Brian here ok  , it means God.

Creatorem? Sounds like creator. So we have 'God the Creator'.

'venite adoremus'? Have the christmas carols started yet? :-) Come let us adore him.

So all together - God the Creator, come let us adore him.

The other line is a little harder, but its 'The heavens declare the glory of God'.

And yes I did have valid astronomical reasons for asking!

LOL. Life of Brian.
When we adore him God? is? [pulls ear]
Brian: Deus?

Case boy case!

Deus is God in the Nominative. Something is happening to God here so he is the object and not the Subject, he is....?
[pulls ear]

Brian : The object. Accusitive! Ah ! Ah! Deum!

http://www.memoriapress.com/help/ wrote: In English the function of a noun (subject, direct object, indirect object, etc) is determined primarily by word placement. Notice how changing word order in the sentence below changes the function of the noun.
The girl (subject) sees the queen (direct object)
The queen (subject) sees the girl (direct object)
In Latin, the function of the noun is determined by the ending.

So all together - God the Creator, come let us adore him.

Yes, but more like "Come ye! We may adore God, the creator."

It seems "adoramus" is Present Subjunctive Active 1st person Plural of "adoro": to call upon, entreat, supplicate, implore

Like we do to ministers (government NOT religious) when we want regulations on light pollution :)

[bible mode]
Let me guess. it is the opening lines of Plalm 19.
God reveals himself through nature.
Verse 1 and 2 mentions the heavens, the day, night, etc. They are telling of God's glory, but then in verse 3, they do this without actual speech.
Verse 4 shows us that natural revelation reaches every place on earth, therefore it reaches every person.
Verse 5 is saying that natural revelation is dominating and powerful. It cannot be ignored. You have to respond to it.
Romans 1:18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress the truth by their unrighteousness,
[/bible mode]

Psalm 19 is all abot nature being revealed to us and man acting on nature.
so my guess...
Anything to do with abuse of nature , the Earth and light pollution???
