I had a look at Mars on Christmas morning around 5am (boy was it cooooold out). It was just a shimmering blob. Couldn't make out any detail as it was now over the roof of a house. I thought there was something wrong with the scope until I turned to Saturn. Sharpest view I have even seen through my scope and my first view this year. The rings were so clear. I only seem to have good seeing due south.
Saturn was a nice xmas present.

It's pretty scarey that an event like this may be about to happen to our closest neighbour.
I know it's a case of WHEN and not IF with earth.
What if it misses Mars and keeps going..............................

Last time I checked Sky and Telscope website the odds have now changed to 25/1 for a hit on Mars.
