As a precaution ,tie a piece of strong nylon thread to the body of the diagonal and super glue the other end to the side of the mirror.

Believe it or not a few scratches on your mirror,even deep nasty "gouges", would probably not noticeably affect the performance of your mirror.
The thing to watch for is the percentage of light lost.
This would not be much, even if the seondary made a few deep gouges.
After all ,there is already a large round hole in the middle of the mirror.
The "shadow" of the secondary!

You could use a silicone transfer adhesive film (sticky tape). Some rubbers are difficult to bond to (especially silicone or nitrile rubbers)-silicone adhesive tends to work well. I can send you a sheet of it if you want.
