Don’t worry; you’re not the only one that has trouble trying to fathom the theories of the Universe/s, all the particles in my head go into quantum spin when I try to understand it to some degree! I do miss Carl Sagan from our TV screens.

I have huge problems understanding theories of quantum physics and mechanics, string theory, brane throry, etc etc but what helped me gain the tiny grasp of the topics that i currently have are Hawkings books A briefer history of time, and the universe in a nutshell.

Sure, its pigeon physics, and contains nothing in the way of mathematics, but it explains the theories by relating to scenarios you can grasp and its the only way I can concieve to get some of the understanding to simple minded folk such as myself.

Great books. reading them again after last nights show. recommend them to all.

I tried to read a "brief history of Time" but found it hard going.... I seen another book last week (in a book shop  ) called something like the "universe for dummies" - I nearly bought it but got to embaressed, and walked out of the shop with the Daily Star instead :D

In my opinion the best popular-level book on this subject was written by Steven Weinberg, co-winner the Nobel Prize for physics for his work in unifying the Electromagnetic Force and the Weak Nuclear Force. (Now called the Electro-Weak force).

(My Viking quote was from the first lines of his book.)
