Everyone in Ireland buys Meade, and they all buy them from Lidl.

Tell you what.... 6 or 7 pints, 4 o'clock in the morning, and a few ropes and pulleys. I reckon we could have a fair attempt at getting it 'operational' again.

Last I heard is that its not repaired so it cant be elevated.
We're very happy to have the Earl start the starparty, it makes an important link between the starparty and the history of the Leviathan IMHO.
Friday cant come fast enough !!

Living locally I check sporadically for any news. At last check there seems to be some problem between the OPW and the Earl over fixing it. It seems that the OPW have now aken over care of the 'scope so you can guess how long it will take to fix. What a shame....... I want to get a webcam image of Saturn or Jupiter thro' it and every time I ask I feel that it might be easier to get a go on HST!

Knowing the OPW (being a former employee), I would say their main reason for tardiness in getting it fixed up is insurance. I'm sure the director would be up all night worrying about people climbing around on gantries in the dark. If it's not accessible to the public they have low insurance; if it is accessible, they have the insurance bill from hell. Cheaper and easier to just leave it be.

A sign of the times. The slightest little scrape on the knee, and someone wants to sue for thousands. Screws up everything, and its the same moaners who complain about high insurance prices... but thats a different forum!
I think it should be the way it was almost 150 years ago - you take your own risk. You know what its going to be like. Why put the blame on somebody else if it was YOU who stuck your finger in there in the first place, when you were told not to!
