Just out of interest, I noted that Markree still holds an observatory code. Whether that was issued as a professional code or otherwise, I've no idea. the measurements submitted by Markree (977) also have no date assigned to them. So I'm not even sure when it last was in operation.

Anyone know?

For the record, here's the list AFAIK...

977 Markree, Sligo. ?
981 Armagh, Armagh. Prof
982 Dunsink, Dublin. Prof
J41 Raheny, Dublin. Amateur
J61 Brownstown, Meath. Amateur
J62 Kingsland, Roscommon. Amateur
J65 Celbridge, Kildare. Amateur

Many thanks for the kind words everyone. It's exciting times for Irish amateur astronomy and the great news is everyone can get involved. All that is required are the standard Mark I eyeballs and a willingness to methodically observe and record. Even astrometry isn't really that difficult, the tricky bit is putting the results into the correct MPC format. They really do tolerate zero errors on that front.

As far as the future for J41. My immediate plans include doing some more astromentry of critical list objects. Asteroid and supernova searches. Maybe even some spectroscopy or observations of extra solar planets might be a goer in the medium term. Of course I can;t forget to take the odd pretty picture too! In the long term I'd like to be able to extend the facilities in some way to the irish astro community by means of a web interface, but thats some way off.

Dave, of course Markree's famous contribution was the discovery of
(9)Metis by Andrew Graham in 1848. To date this is the only asteroid discovered from Ireland. That is something we should and can change. Even nowadays with professional surveys scanning huge amounts of sky. There is still an opportunity for amateur discoveries. They still can't look everywhere at once.

Dave.

Blackrock and Galway would be two obvious missing professional observatories.

Congratulations Dave by the way!

Thanks Al.

I don't think Galway and Blackrock are IAU coded? At least I can't find them in the list.
