Thanks for the great evening out DIAS and co.! It was great to see the Grubb, FINALLY, and look through it. I think I have added a 12" refractor to my Wanted list of astronomical 'accessories'... :D

Did anyone catch Lulin after with the smaller scopes? I could just about spot it with the naked eye from the bog near my home when I got here.

Many thanks to Dee, the IAS, Hilary & DIAS for a great evening in Dunsink.
It was great to see Venus, the Moon, M42 and Saturn through the telescope!
The sambos, pie and tea were also quite tasty!

Thanks again,

Michael.

Hi Seanie,

After spotting Comet Lulin in the 12x36s (it appeared rather faint as it was still rather low down in the horizon haze) I found it in the 70mm refractor (Pronto) at 25x.

When I got home (to Rush) it was a fine sight in the binoculars,

John

Replied by DeirdreKelleghan on topic Re:Change Notice: Dunsink Visit from IFAS to Sun March 1st

IFAS stickers were given out to all attending yesterday.
It was a significant day in Irish Astronomy.

Paul Dempsey DIAS talks about Non Thermal High Energy Emissions

David Branigan arrives with broken ankle :-(

Terry Moseley and Angela O'Connell in Dunsink for the meeting

Michael Murphy and Paul Dempsey do a little solar observing

Our second speaker on JETSETS interactive Database Perikles Rammos checks out the moon

Philip Lardner moves the Grubb

Michael O'Connell and Dee check out the moon , so so good.

Philip checks out Saturn

Philip and Dee waltz in the dome , we all had a great time and the sky was clear
I did a sketch of Lulin when I got home , will post later.

Not bad for a mobile phone camera and a 140 year old telescope
Michael O'Connell took the image through the Grubb. :-)

It was great to have wireless broadband in the observatory for the first time.
My thanks to everyone that came along , and to Hilary O'Donnell and DIAS for their support on the day.

Dee,

Many thanks for organising another great event - it was lovely to finally see Dunsink in the daylight, and to really use the 12" refractor instead of just getting a 30 second glimpse through the eyepiece! Dancing in the Moonlight with you under the dome was the highlight!!

If anyone from the SDAS is reading - I picked up a number of telescope IFAS stickers and cards from Dave McDonnell yesterday for the 100Hrs / International Year of Astronomy event this year. The stickers are for putting on your telescopes for public events, and the cards are for handing out to the public as a point of contact. Michael Murphy also has a small supply. Well done to Dave Mc. for knocking these out! Let me know if you want some!

Phil.
