A truly inspirational Man. Patrick was the inspiration to generations of us. He was the reason why so many took up astronomy in the first place. I remember as a young boy, watching the Sky at Night and just being amazed by this man and how much he loved what he did. Carl and myself were lucky enough to have spent time with Patrick on a few occassions. He was incredibly welcoming. One thing was sure when the drinking sessions began in his study, we would fall over before he did. It used to drive his carers mad because they didn't want him staying up late, but going to bed when there was a party on was unthinkable. He was always thinking of other people. One time he had Carl and myself phoning round every radio station in southern england because a local war veteran was being denied an sight saving operation by the UK NHS. Of course initially they were not interested but as soon as Patrick's name was mentioned, suddenly it became top priority.

What struck me about Patrick was although he knew how highly regarded he was, he was never aloof about it. He loved nothing better than to be at the centre of a big group telling stories at cracking jokes. That's how I will remember this great man.

In latter years Patrick was struck by ill health but he never let it get him down. He dearly missed observational astronomy. He tried so hard to keep it up but he became resigned to the sad reality that his body was just now up to it anymore. Iguess today has been coming, but he bounced back from ill health so many times that I would not have been surprised if he had pulled it off again. Alas it was not to be. I think he goes to his rest along as the true hero of amateur astronomy. He has bid 'Good night' for the final time but his legacy will never be forgotten.

We'll all miss you Patrick, may you rest in peace.

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.

I don’t know what to say at this time or what can be said. You are and always be an inspiration too many generations of astronomers young and old. You always made people so welcome when visiting your home. Patrick you will shine brighter than any star in the night sky in all our hearts. Rest in peace my dear friend.
