Very sad news. I never got to meet the man in person. Like many others he was the man who inspired my interest in astronomy. I remember staying up late at night to watch the program when everyone else was long in bed. May he rest in peace

Here's a bit of a treat from 2008. At one of Patrick's garden parties in Selsey, myself and Dave set about making this video. A bit of a behind the scene's look. Plenty of laugh's and great memories. — with Pete Lawrence, Damian Peach, Ian Sharp, Bruce Kingsley and Carl O'Beirnes who looks much skinner now.

I've regarded Sir Patrick Moore as one of several British institutions that I find reassuring in that I have known them all my life and to lose one is unsettling as
it is a reminder that things can not remain the same forever - even when its something we hold in very high regard indeed.
All is not well, for example, if Big Ben falls silent - and it is that sort of import to me - institution wise.
Patrick was inspirational to very many on these islands - and further afield - for a very long time. Patrick has been instrumental (via The Sky at Night series) in fuelling my early interest in astronomy.
I haven't really met the man as some others on this forum have (mine is quite superficial).
I have attended a couple of lectures / talks of his in - or around - November 1980 in the physics lecture theatre of Queen Mary College, University of London. At that time he was an occasional / regular guest speaker.
I don't recall what he talked about.
On one of those occasions there was a mingling / after lecture get together - in which I mingled.
At one point Patrick was talking to a small group of students (which included me) huddled around him and he declared:-
"The 5th of November is the day we celebrate the man we most need in Parliament today!"
The only thing I remember him saying that day - but by no means the only thing I remember him for.
Dave Grennan is quite correct - his legacy will be with us for very long time to come.
