hi Aubrey,
I'll aim to be there for 9pm also ... but give me a shout if you want to link up in Ranelagh first and you can then follow me down to the site.
Trooperstown Wood is on the Annamoe to Laragh road. It's about 20 minutes extra driving time from the Sugar Loaf car park.
Basically, go through Roundwood and Annamoe, heading for Glendalough. On the left-hand side a little before Laragh you'll see a sign for Trooperstown Wood. The www.osi.ie map viewer link is maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,715549,697205,4,10 -- this should show Trooperstown exactly centred but it is unlabelled in the viewer.
I use the Wicklow Mountains East sheet from East-West mapping. Trooperstown Wood is marked on this as is the car park where we set up. These are terrific maps with not just the usual data but lots of historic and local place names along with extra trails other maps don't have. See www.eastwestmapping.ie

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better programs, and the universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning.

Gosh, you could be right on that Paul! I'll fence off an area Friday evening
I might take a trip down to the Laragh/Ashford vicinity tomorrow afternoon to have a look at other possible observing sites. There's a couple of smaller parking spots marked on the map that may have a better southern aspect. That said, Trooperstown Hill isn't really high enough to block the views.
