Sentimentality has no place in scientific definitions, if you want to be sentimental, go do astrology.
Ironically that lot are getting a great laugh out of this. "Its the affects that these planets and their positions have thats important not what they are called"

It just goes to show what a farce the whole astrology thing is, how can they explain not using Quaoar/Sedna or Ceres. I'll stop now as this is a debate for another time/thread. When you think about it, its amazing it hasnt come up before.

A fierce backlash has begun against the decision by astronomers to strip Pluto of its status as a planet.

Nice to see the idea of 'cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit' coming under attack. Apart from the clear flaw that if pluto hasn't cleared its neighbourhood then neptune can't have either; they point out that 'Earth orbits with 10,000 near-Earth asteroids. Jupiter, meanwhile, is accompanied by 100,000 Trojan asteroids on its orbital path.'
Rather than having a campaign to re-instate pluto (which is a side show of the argument anyway), it might be better to have one to demote the Earth as a planet since it fails the IAU criteria
The more you think about this definition the sillier it gets.

Seems like the pro pluto people had the whole thing sabotaged from the start, in that they agreed to a definition that would eventually be dismissed thus re-instating Plutos planetary status.
