I tend to agree with Artyfarty. The fact that something (Pluto) was known for over 70 yrs as a planet and was then "demoted" shows that astronomy IS a very real living sceintific subject (not that that fact has ever been doubted recently).

I remember when the earth was thought to be flat and the centre of the universe.

The fact (when discovered) that this was not true didnt go down too well with many people................yet it now considered one of the most important findings (if not the most important) in human history.

Astronomy is NOTHING to be laughed at (unless you be a Creationist).

It's the only science where professionals and amateurs alike can get involved and work side by side.

Now if ONLY i could discover a comet......................i would die a happy man.

How silly.

Is Pluto paid less now that he has been demoted?

yes...

When does a hill become a mountain?

When the people in charge of the hills/mountains say so. .

The entire argument demeans Astronomy and invites sniggers..
Peter.

You'd be amazed what people snigger at..

all tongue in cheek of course.

I hate those people that make a mountain out of a mole hill.

It's all just about agreeing on units of measure really isn't it?
From weight, money, time, volume, area etc.
it's been changing for centuries and will
continue to change.
Problem is people don't like change.

If you wanna go use imperial measurement (miles/inches etc) that's up to you.
The modern system is metric and that's the reality of it as is the new definition of a planet of which Pluto is not one.
