Dear friends ... and especially my buddy Frank ( ),
Can I get some feedback as to the best way to reach Inisheer and which seems to be a very short distance from Galway (Frank's back yard)? Also, for someone flying into Ireland from overseas, is Dublin the only major airport or is there a better (shorter) alternative?
Many thanks in advance!
Anthony.

Anthony - good to hear from you again. Do I detect a 'project' in progress?
As Roy says, Shannon airport would be closer though there are very good bus and train services from Dublin to Galway. Once in Galway/Shannon, you can get to Inisheer by boat or plane (from Connemara Airport). They are seasonal.
There are some other options - PM me.
Dave

That's tough Seanie, to be dumped like that in public, on a message board . Lol
Planning an imaging run there Anthony ?
There is a great motorway system nowadays, you can get from Dublin to Galway very easily, a trip that would have been a nightmare several years ago and from near there either fly or get a ferry.
I've been to the Aran Islands many times, you can get there by ferry from Doon in county Clare or from Rosaveel near Galway, there might be a ferry from Galway City itself, but this I'm not sure about, you'll need to check .
There are also flights from Inverin to the islands, see
www.aerarannislands.ie
The ferries are very season dependent, I'd imagine the flights would be also. The flights are very scenic, when the weather is nice.

Gents .... and Seanie,
There is indeed a couple of projects which are beginning to develop the best way possible. For example, just last night I came across the remnants of a shipwreck just north of Dublin (Baltray Beach).
As for Inisheer, I can easily foresee myself spending a three-day long weekend with the goodies available on the island for imaging under the night sky (star trails, Milky Way, rising constellations etc).
Thanks to all you for the information above and which I will use to investigate matters further. Flights between Athens and Dublin with return can be had for under 200 euro (ex Swiss Air) and which is music to my ears. I located a package deal where for 37 euro one has an evening's accommodation in Inisheer as well as roundtrip ferry tickets (see www.aranislandferries.com/times_meainoirr.php ) with 10% discounts available for online bookings.
I am delighted to learn of the service between Dublin and Galway (thanks Dave) since it helps a lot with multiple projects during the same trip.
Gotta experience that legendary Irish hospitality.
