Very similar issues here.
As the others mention if it's glare coming towards you a light shield will help. If it's indirect like here maybe an IDAS filter would help?
We have a similar problem. Next door is a night club that has very very powerful lights, making it impossible to see anything but a mag 2 star over about 1/4 of the sky from the east to south and to about 40 degrees up.
Ordered an IDAS filter from astromart to see if it makes any difference.
A black widow would probably be more efficient though

Hi,
Thanks to those for helpful suggestions. It's the sideways glare from this light that's the real problem. Only a small fraction of it's light illuminates the road.
The shield is probably the best idea.
The sky itself is reasonably ok, despite being not too far from Dublin.

Sure is John, I don't go about a session without it now, It can be the difference between staying with this hobby, or just plain giving it up
Be sure to build one, it only takes a few hours, and well worth the effort!

Missed this thread. oops.
Have you tried writing to the council and asking them to change the fitting or asking them to put up a screen?
It may not have much effect and you may have to resort to making a scrren but for the price of a stamp and 20 minutes to write the letter it may help. What it will do is let them know that there are people who care about bad lighting.
Cheers,
~Al
