I have seen that many times before (as well as the typical 'rainbow' Moon Halo). Often when there is mist/moisture in the air and the Moon is high in the sky as it traverses during the night, I have seen it.
While there is mist in the air, where the Moon is to be seen is free of cloud, as you do need a bright light source to make a rainbow!
Seanie.

i will confirm this sighting. i live just outside stillorgan, and when bring the dog out to relieve herself there was a huge colourful ring around the moon, very near invisible but it was there, it was huge, way bigger than the moon. must have had a diameter of 7 - 10 moons at least. never saw that before

That's a moon Halo. Not quite the same thing as a moon bow .... but very cool!

I took this one from my house in Larne on Wednesday 3rd Jan. I noticed that I could see the Wolf Moon out the front whilst it was tipping down with rain, so I went to the back of the house and started shooting.
This is 8 secs at ISO 1600 f5.6, so hardly surprising that I couldn't actually see it!

Hi Paul,
Am I right in saying that you took this shot in the off chance that there might be a moon bow invisible there to you but detectable by the camera?
I'm impressed, a great capture
