Building a dome support shed, what building height ? was created by astroguy
I am planning to start building a small shed to put my (explora) dome on.
I am wrestling about how high to make the building.
Either low so that one can comfortably look through the telescope or high enough to be able to stand inside all of the the building. This would require a step or platform to step up to the higher telescope.
Anyone has experience or advise making this choice?
Thanks
Jouke

Hi Jouke,
I had the same dilemma when I got my dome, how high does it need to be without looking like a grain silo.
Basically, the way I decided it was that the scope+dew shield needs to be able to move freely inside the dome without hitting any of the walls and never require the need to remove the dew shield. In places it clears the dome by about an inch. The top of my dome is just over 8 feet high, but as my dome is not the same as yours, my domes figures are not of much use to you.

Jouke - what size and type of scope you putting in there? And what's the height of the pier (if you've decided that yet)?

Hi Dave,
The building will b 3x3 m and the dome is about 2.5 meter. My scope is a 10" Meade
I should also mention that the viewing site has almost horizontal viewing all around so I will want the scope to be able to go from horizontal or 10 degrees to zenith.
The pier height will be determined by how high the building will be which is why I need to settle this basic issue of how high I want it to be. Choosing between the convenience of viewing height or standing height.
Regards,
Jouke

Jouke - presumably, you want to be able to stand inside the building (i.e. no crouching and stooping) - so that's the first data point. The second consideration would be the what height is comfortable for viewing.
Are you GEM or Alt-Az?
There is an option you might consider... Build the wall height such that with the dome installed, you can freely and comfortably stand and operate the dome and shutter(s). Then install an adjustable height pier (see www.pier-tech.com ). That will ensure your viewing height is always comfortable.

Yes David, I think you are right. The comfort of standing up in the building supersedes the Telescope height issue.
Thanks for the Piertech URL (I was ware of it) and maybe I should spend an extra 1500$ or what to solve the issue of pier height.
I need to work out how I can construct my pier and still have the option to buy the Piertech later (Cash flow)
One option would be to not make a pier at all for now and experiment with heights using the tripod.
I am actually thinking to restrict to visual and short exposure photography thus using Alt Az
