I have been researching the subject of adjustable piers.
It appears the that the famous adjustable pier2 from piertech is in fact a variety of a LINAK desk pier. the DL 2
www.linak.co.uk/
www.linak.com/Products/?id2=4

Pier tech in the US charge 1750$ for the 220v version (+ transport and VAT)

I have been talking to a Linak sales guy and he gives me a ball park 450 Euro for the DL2
Interesting difference!
I have asked him to email me radial stability figures of the DL2
I will be researching this further. Meanwhile: Any comments?

Looks interesting!

A couple of points that spring to mind:
1) How will you connect the base of the scope to the pillar? (central bolt?)
2) Will the internal column remain rock solid and stable or will there be any wobble in it? The slightest wobble will render it useless.

Clear skies,

An interesting difference indeed!
BUT the linak piers are not solely for astronomical use,
how much of a wobble is there, do you need to polar re-align, will it tilt?
All questions that you will need answers to.
I'd bet is not accurate enough for a scope.

Why not make the floor height-adjustable and put in a steady anchored pier?

Jouke,

Nice catch ... I sincerely hope it is appropriate for astronomical use. The price difference is dramatic and hopefully it will not be due to "backslash" as the column is raised or lowered.

Please keep us posted!

Yes folks,
The stability of the thing (I called it radial stability) will be crucial. The sales guy promised to email me specs about it. So I eagerly await those. The manual on the Linak site. give some figures but I am not a mechanical engineer so I have difficulty interpreting them.
I found Linak because I read about german amateur astronomer that took a Pier tech pier apart and found Linak parts in-there.

The prize is this: If I can use this extendable device I can raise my dome building wall height from 120 to 170 and have it all. Observing comfort and standing height in the corners of the building.
I will keep you posted.
