spotting scope in Aldi

There is a nice little spotting scope on offer in Aldi on sunday 11th of feb. for 36 euro's. There is a nice little tripod that goes along with and by the looks of it I am sure you could hook your digital camera onto the tripod aswell, for all those budding photographers out there

If you were bold enough you could try and hook the scope onto a telescope as a excellent viewfinder!! Thats probably a big maybe

A cheap guidescope perhaps, but with a minimum 20x magnification not the best finder.

I have to admit I'd prefer to buy the more expensive spotting scope package offered by Lidl in Britain before Christmas. On previous occasions when I've checked out binoculars on offer at Aldi they weren't comparable to the quality of those sold by Lidl.

Looks decent enough for 35 lids doesn't it. Beware of one thing though. I'm 99% sure the eyepiece is non removable!! Could be good as a second finder for close in star hopping after using a lower power finder to get into the general area. I think I'll get one to throw in the back of the car for those times when your driving down a dark country road and its clear.

I picked up a cheap spotting scope when in Germany recently.
it was a 90mm scope with a built in Zoom from 30-60.

It was also advertised also as a having multicoated lenses. It gives passable images but it has a very small Field of view even at 30X. At higher mags, you need a stable mount for it and TBH I have not used it much at all.

It is ok for quick looks at the moon at about 45X but thats about it. If it had a wider FOV, it would be much more useable. As for the tripod advertised with the aldi scope, it looks like it is about a foot high, and only fit for your pocket digicam. but then for €36 it is a bit of fun.

Just bought one as a present but I'll keep it and buy another one as the present.

A fair bit of field curvature and chromatic abberation in the outer 10% of the field.

The field is fairly narrow,but this is the interesting bit: It is tack sharp in the inner 90% of the field.(I never look at the edge of a field anyway.)

I'll see how it splits Mizar and Cassini's division tonight and give a merciless review.

It's been a while since I posted here last.......

.....anyway, bought one of these myself, more out of curiousity than anything. Suprised at how good it is, not perfect by any means, but not bad at all!
I had my first chance tonight to bring it out for spin. Mounted it on a full size camera tripod (not the farty little one that came with it!) Picked up the Orion Nebula first, nice clear, sharp view at the lowest mag (x20) then bought it up the the max slowly (x60) not expecting much but to my suprise, with a slight adjustment of the focus, came up clear again.
Next I turned towards Saturn, first at x20, then up to x60 and was able the make out the rings fairly clearly. The I did a few open clusters and was pleased with the views I got.

This isn't a substitute for a real telescope and I wouldn't recomend it as a starter scope, it' a little difficult to find your target in the small field of view, but for anyone the has a fair knowledge of the sky, it's not too bad (it took me less than 30 seconds to find any of the targets I went after) but for anyone that uses binoculars it a nice addition giving the higher magnification. I also personally like the fact that the view isn't mirrored. I'm looking forward to the moon coming back so that I can try it out on that.
